“Balance of Power” by Vitalik Buterin
🧠 Vitalik Buterin published an article titled “Balance of Power”, where he explains one core idea: the greatest threat to the future is not technology itself, but excessive concentration of power.
🔴 There are three forces in the world that people simultaneously want and fear: governments (Big Government), large corporations (Big Business), and mass movements or crowds (Big Mob). Each can be beneficial—providing order, innovation, or civic engagement—but each becomes dangerous when it accumulates too much power.
🔴 In the past, balance emerged naturally: large systems were slow, inefficient, and difficult to scale. Today, that constraint is gone. Technology, automation, and closed platforms allow a single actor to scale almost without limits, reinforcing “winner-takes-all” dynamics.
🔴 Therefore, the key challenge of the 21st century is preserving balance of power, not eliminating powerful players.
🔴 The state should act as the rules of the game, not as a player imposing its own objectives. Business should not become monopolistic, dominating culture, politics, and the economy. Civil society must remain pluralistic, not collapse into a single, easily controlled mass.
🔴 The solution is diffusion: open standards, interoperability, the ability to exit, fork, and connect without permission. Power is acceptable; hegemony is not. Many strong actors are better than one all-powerful entity.
The core message: we must build systems that empower individuals while preventing anyone from gaining total control over others.
