The Wall Street Journal explained yesterday’s sell-off in precious metals by the CME raising margin requirements for gold and silver futures.

However, seasoned market participants argue that this is only a small part of the bigger picture, according to analysts at Bogdanoff Market Research.

In their view, margin hikes often act as a formal trigger, while the real drivers usually lie deeper — in positioning, excessive leverage, crowded trades, and broader macro forces such as liquidity conditions, real yields, and shifts in risk appetite. Historically, similar episodes have marked short-term shakeouts, rather than definitive trend reversals, especially in structurally bullish commodity cycles.
